Project Based Learning
PBL in the Classroom: First and Second graders engage in the study of the natural and social sciences through a project-based learning approach. Project-based learning allows students to deeply explore topics and engage in authentic dialog about the world around them. Each unit begins with knowledge acquisition research and inquiry. Our classroom community is filled with thinkers who bring their own areas of expertise and passion to the group. All of student's unique interests and inquiries are welcomed and nurtured through discussion and research. Students eventually choose a final project to synthesize their learning from the unit. Projects link to the curricular theme of the year and can span over multiple months. It is critical for students to continually reflect upon their progress and the quality of their work. Rubrics are used for teachers and students to assess their process as well as their final projects.
Science and social studies are the foundation for our speaking, listening, reading and writing development. Many of our units include written reports or presentations. As we work toward those presentations, students have countless opportunities to experience science and social studies concepts in authentic and hands on ways. Based on student interest and inquiry, we strive to extend upon the grade level appropriate concepts outlined by the Iowa Common Core standards for Science and Social Studies as we move through three units each year. These units are described in further detail on the tabs labeled Curriculum: Home Page and Curriculum Maps.
PBL in Group Discussion: This K-6 meeting allows students to learn about their younger and older peers through roll call, read aloud, and discussion. This meeting time allows K-6 students to discuss any full school issues, concerns or projects 4 days each week. Following the same project based learning format described above, students brainstorm solutions to any issues that arise and design and collectively decide upon any necessary steps to take. Students also research, design and implement several service projects in multi-age groups throughout the year.
